Justice Sanjeev Kumar Appointed Acting Chief Justice of J&K and Ladakh High Court

The Central government on Wednesday notified the appointment of Justice Sanjeev Kumar as the Acting Chief Justice of the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court. His appointment takes effect from April 10, 2025, following the retirement of current Chief Justice Tashi Rabstan on April 9.

“In exercise of the power conferred by Article 223 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Sanjeev Kumar… to perform the duties of the office of the Chief Justice… with effect from 10.04.2025,” the Union Law Ministry stated.

Born on April 8, 1966, in Kathua, Justice Kumar graduated in law from the University of Jammu in 1988 and enrolled as an advocate in 1989. He was elevated to the Bench in June 2017 and has over 200 reported judgments to his credit.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the appointment of Justice Arun Palli of the Punjab and Haryana High Court as the next Chief Justice of the J&K and Ladakh High Court. The recommendation, made on April 4, 2025, is yet to receive approval from the Centre.
