Kochi, March 22: Kerala Law Minister P. Rajeev has urged the central government to expedite the passage of the Advocates’ Protection Bill, citing increasing threats and attacks on legal professionals.
In a formal request, Rajeev emphasized that advocates play a crucial role in upholding justice and ensuring the effective functioning of the judiciary. He highlighted recent incidents of violence against lawyers and stressed the need for a comprehensive legal framework to safeguard their rights and security.
The proposed bill seeks to provide legal protection to advocates, prevent harassment, and establish mechanisms to address threats faced by legal practitioners. The minister asserted that enacting such legislation would strengthen the rule of law and enhance the independence of the legal profession.
Rajeev’s appeal has gained support from legal associations and bar councils, who have been demanding stronger measures to protect advocates from undue pressure and violence. The legal community now awaits the central government’s response on the matter.
